Xanax is the brand name of the benzodiazepine prescription medication called alprazolam. Typically used to treat people who have anxiety and panic disorders, Xanax works by interacting with the brain’s receptors to inhibit brain activity related to anxiety. However, a Xanax addiction may result when the drug is misused.
Xanax is a fast-acting drug. Most people feel the effects within 60 minutes and they will last about six hours. It can be taken multiple times a day as outlined by the doctor’s prescription. Unfortunately, even those taking the medication as prescribed may need a prescription drug addiction center without even realizing it.
Misuse of Xanax may lead to tolerance, dependence, and addiction. Xanax addiction comes from abuse by individuals who take it recreationally, take too much, or take it more frequently than prescribed for its sedative effects.
People with a Xanax addiction also build up a tolerance where they need more of it to feel the same effects. Dependency may develop when people want to avoid the withdrawal symptoms that occur when they aren’t taking the medication. Life revolves around drug use and may lead to some taking other drugs when they can’t gain access to Xanax.
A research study by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) reported that benzodiazepines were involved in 28.7% of emergency room visits in 2011. Alprazolam (Xanax) was the benzodiazepine found in about one-third (9.9%) of these visits.
Using alprazolam for long periods of time can cause many negative effects on the human body. Since this drug depresses the central nervous system, it slows down certain mental and physical parts of the body. Typical effects of alprazolam abuse include:
Xanax is a depressant and so is alcohol. When taken together, Xanax and alcohol create a dangerous situation that results in breathing slowdowns or to a dangerous level of stopping completely. Combining alprazolam (or any other benzodiazepine) could lead to serious injuries, coma or death.
