Addiction takes you down a dark path. The deeper you get into alcohol and drugs, the darker the path becomes; away from God’s light and love. For Walter Barrera, crystal meth and crack took him down a dark road. However, with some help from drug addiction treatment and running, he found his way toward God.

The Dark Road

Barrera started his journey in war torn El Salvador. He lived through the pain of being sexually abused as a child and his father leaving the family behind to go to America. Although his father brought his family to live a new life in the United Stated years later, Barrera was consumed by pain and anger. He fell into sin, drinking alcohol when he was 16 years old and doing drugs at 19. His drug use continued in his mid-20s in the form of crystal meth and then crack. For years he committed crimes and hurt loved ones to feed his addiction to drugs. Although he was not physically in jail prior to addiction treatment, he was in a prison of his own.

Walking in the Light

But just as in Hebrews 12:1-3, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” It wasn’t until he attempted addiction treatment again, began running and most importantly found his way back to God that Walter’s life turned around. He was finally able to forgive the people who had caused him pain and anger and leave his sinful life behind.
