David Crowder Band’s song “Oh How He Loves Me” constantly puts me in a state of bliss. Reflecting on how much God loves me and pours out His blessings onto me on a daily basis is mind blowing. Crowder’s lyrics “Loves like a hurricane, I am a tree, bending beneath the weight of his wind and mercy,” is a beautiful reminder of how God shapes and molds us in his image. He does this despite our best ability to make a mess out of things- especially in addiction. For me personally, it also relates to recovery and our constant growth. When we are under the influence of drugs and alcohol we participate in thoughts and behaviors that go against our true nature and when we get sober we are plagued with shame about our past behaviors. Crowder beautifully states, “Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes, if grace is an ocean, we are all sinking.” We must recognize and embrace that God has paid the price for our past and future sins. Beating ourselves up with shame is not His plan for our lives. Grace and forgiveness has been poured upon us and we in turn are able to help other fellow addicts find Christ-centered recovery. I can listen to this song over and over again tapping into a state of worship no matter where I am. God helps me so that I don’t seek drugs and alcohol to self-medicate. Music is the one way I connect with Him in my program of recovery. How do you connect with God?
