Recognition and Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders in the Addiction Population

Course Summary

The coexistence of a mental illness and a Substance Use Disorder is referred to as a co-occurring disorder. The term dual diagnosis is often used to describe this condition. Studies show that people with a mental illness are more likely to experience a Substance Use Disorder. According to SAMHSA’s 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 8.4 million adults in the United States have a co-occurring disorder. During this presentation, Dr. Kaplan will provide epidemiologic data regarding co-occurring disorders. He’ll also discuss the diagnosis of co-occurring disorders, the use of psychometric tools and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, and psychological and pharmacologic treatments.

The audience will receive information regarding:

  • The epidemiology of co-occurring disorders. The prevalence of the different co-occurring disorders will be discussed. The genetics of the different co-occurring disorders will be discussed. Cultural/sex/age-related factors will be discussed.
  • The co-occurrence of Major Depressive Disorder and Addictions. This will include psychometric tools helpful in diagnosing Major Depressive Disorder and the DSM-5 criteria for Major Depressive Disorder.
  • The co-occurrence of Anxiety Disorders and Addictions. This will include psychometric tools helpful in diagnosing Anxiety Disorders and the DSM-5 criteria for the various Anxiety Disorders.
  • The co-occurrence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Addictions. This will include psychometric tools helpful in diagnosing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and the DSM-5 criteria for Bipolar Disorder.
  • The co-occurrence of Bipolar Disorder and Addictions. This will include psychometric tools helpful in diagnosing Bipolar Disorder and the DSM-5 criteria for Bipolar Disorder.
  • The co-occurrence of Attention Deficit Disorder and Addictions. This will include psychometric tools helpful in diagnosing Attention Deficit Disorder and the DSM-5 criteria for Attention Deficit Disorder.
  • The various psychotherapies utilized in the treatment of co-occurring disorders.
  • The various medications utilized in the treatment of co-occurring disorders.
