This week of Muscle Mondays starts a transition to the lower body. Starting at the top, we begin with three muscles that have significant impact on all lower body movement. These muscles are the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus, and they are referred to as the “glutes”. In case you missed it by the name, these muscles differ in size, but not too much else. The maximus starts on the iliac crest and sacrum and connects into a soft tissue structure known as the IT band that travels down to the top of your tibia. The smaller medius and minimus begin on the ilium and insert onto the greater trochanter, or head of the femur. With the locations in mind, these muscles move your hip in every direction, and even extend the entire leg behind you due to the connection of the IT band. Strengthening your glutes is a top priority in any training program because these muscles are not just something you sit on.
