Hi! My name is Lauren Stobbie and I’m the fitness program supervisor at Lakeview Health. While there are many exercises out there to choose from, below is a breakdown of my top five!
#1. Power Clean
The power clean is one of the best full body explosive exercises. It engages all the major muscles in the body from the calves all the way up to the traps. It is a great exercise to help build allover strength and power.
#2. Handstand Pushup
This exercise is one of my favorites for building shoulder strength. It’s also a great exercise to add into your workout if your limited on equipment or want to do a calisthenic based workout. The strength built from handstand pushups carries into other upper body exercises such as the shoulder press or push press.
#3. Front Squat
There are about a million different ways to perform a squat, but the front squat is one of my favorites because it forces me to keep correct form. You have to make sure that your weight stays in your heels, your chest stays vertical, and your core stays engaged in order to perform this lift correctly. It’s also another exercise that works all three major muscles of the lower body.
#4. Dumbbell Snatch
The DB snatch is another good exercise for building explosive strength. A lot of gyms don’t allow Olympic lifting with a barbell so using the dumbbell is a great replacement. This exercise also works all major muscle groups in the body.
#5. Walking Lunges
Walking lunges are one of the best exercises for building the lower body. This exercise recruits all three large lower body muscle groups: quads, hamstrings, and glutes. I always know that if I incorporate this exercise into my workouts I’m going to be sore the next day.
