Football fans are anticipating a good game between the 49ers and Ravens. Every year around Super Bowl time, Lakeview Health offers some tips for staying sober for our newly recovering addicts and for our alumni. Even if you think that triggers will not be present this weekend, you should still prepare in case one comes up that you may have overlooked.

Preparation for Super Bowl Sobriety

First, it is important to explore what your surroundings will be on Super Bowl Sunday. Where will you be, who will you be with, will there be alcohol, will there be drug use and a schedule of events? Next, have a support plan in place, similar to the one you had when you left drug rehab treatment. Make a list of people you can call, including your sponsor if you need to, have an exit plan if you are unable to manage triggers and always do to the next right thing: Don’t pick up. Lastly, if you are going to a house party, bring something that you like: chips, dip, drinks and/or dessert. This way you will always have something to nosh o, during the game that you know will satisfy you.

Being a Super Bowl Support

Being a support for someone else may help you stay accountable and sober, too. That is part of the premise behind service work in the 12 steps. This applies to Super Bowl weekend, too. Be a support for a fellow addict in recovery to not only help them, but help you. What other tips do you have to stay sober for this weekend? Share your comments below or on our Facebook page. Your tips will help others in recovery.
