Picture this: A flock of seagulls walking on a South Florida beach, looking for leftover food to eat. While looking for food, they come upon a package that has washed ashore. They begin pecking away, as usual, searching for food and find a special surprise: Marijuana. I am sure the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) would have a field day with my lack of sensitivity on this issue, but this truly is a hilarious picture. And it didn’t happen quite that way, so no seagulls were harmed. The Sun Sentinel reported that four packages of marijuana (weighing 60 lbs. and worth about $50,000-$75,000) washed ashore in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Some guy probably got paranoid about being pulled over by the Coast Guard and dumped his weed. Another possibility is that that this weed was purposefully dumped at sea to wash ashore and be collected by someone who was waiting for it. Police arrested one man who was seen with one of the packages and dropped it before the police got to him. This was either a case of bad luck or purposeful behavior. The risks that addicts and drug dealers take to make a quick dollar are astonishing. In Florida, the possession of 60 lbs. of marijuana can lead to a sentence of three years in prison and up to $50,000 in fines. While this story is amusing, addiction fuels drug dealing and both are serious problems that should not be taken lightly. What are you thoughts about the carelessness of the disposal of drugs?
