Smoking alcohol is becoming quite popular. That’s right—people are pouring alcohol over dry ice and inhaling the vapor so they can get drunk without consuming sugar or calories. Smoking alcohol can’t be as bad as drinking it, right? Wrong.
Who’s Doing It?
You may think that women make up the majority of alcohol smokers. But the videos popping up on YouTube mostly show young men doing it. Some of them talk about the extreme high they get when smoking alcohol. Drunkorexics are also catching on to the trend. These people are calorie-conscious. They limit their intake of food calories so they can feel better about consuming the ones in alcohol.
Consequences
When someone inhales alcohol, the liver doesn’t metabolize it. The vapor goes straight into the lungs. From there, it travels to the brain. The user’s mouth and nasal passages can dry out, possibly leaving him or her at risk for infection. Even worse, alcohol poisoning is likely to happen faster. When you drink too much alcohol, your body induces vomiting to prevent alcohol poisoning. Your body can’t do this if the alcohol doesn’t make it into your stomach. Changing the way you ingest alcohol doesn’t make it any healthier. Whether you’re watching your sugar or calorie intake, or just want to feel a different kind of high, smoking alcohol is not worth the potential damage. What do you think about this new trend?
