Mary J. Blige reflected on Whitney Houston a year after her death and what Blige needs to do to not end up like her sister in the Lord. The singers were great friends who shared talent for music, love for life and the torment of addiction. Houston lost her battle with addiction February 11, 2012. Her death brought great sadness to family, friends and fans. If Romans 8:28 is true, then God has a plan for our benefit and His ultimate glory, which even applies to tragedy. This may just have been the wakeup call Blige needed to recognize and be honest about her own struggles with addiction. Blige was quoted in the Christian Post saying that although she struggled with alcohol and cocaine in the past, she decided that she could continue to socially drink. Blige said, “I chose to learn how to drink socially and it didn’t work. The test comes when you have to decide whether you’re drinking to be social or drinking to cover up something again.” Blige’s statement on social drinking is a well-known struggle that many alcoholics and addicts face when leaving drug rehab. They may try to continue feeling in control. Losing a friend to addiction is painful and recognizing that you might be going down the same path can save your life. Losing Houston to the disease of addiction gave Blige insight into changes she needed to make to stay alive. She is now committed to eliminating all substance abuse and credits her belief in God and staying saturated with scripture to helping her stay sober. Did God ever use tragedy to help you?
