You might have said that you were not going to use or drink again, but when you did, you felt that familiar feeling: Shame. It’s a very powerful emotion that can cause pain and guilt. You might feel the need to get help and seek forgiveness and strength, but shame makes it difficult.
The Danger of Shame
As a child of God, you know you need to stay on the right path. However, now that you have strayed and fallen into alcohol and drugs, you feel inferior, inadequate and have failed as a Christian. Your shame might force you to hide away from God and the farther you get away from Him, the deeper you fall into drug and/or alcohol addiction. What you don’t realize is that God is always watching over all His children. We are all sinners. Just like Psalms 34:18 tells us “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit,” God is there for you if you seek him out. He delivers you from your transgressions. Hiding away from Him in shame only hurts you and distances you from Him.
You Are Worthy of His Love
Don’t let your mistakes and shame keep you away from a relationship from God. Shame makes you believe that you are not worthy of His love and attention and your addiction problem grows even more. If you get past the shame and guilt and seek God’s help and attention, He will strengthen you with His love. Getting help for your drug or alcohol addiction is as easy as one phone call.
