Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) February 27, 2015 Those who self-injure, commonly referred to as “cutters”, are often misunderstood, misdiagnosed and therefore aren’t receiving effective treatment necessary to return to healthy lives. Jacksonville-based addiction treatment center Lakeview Health has opened the doors of its highly acclaimed Lakeview Professional Lecture Series to counselors, physicians, families and others interested in understanding this complicated condition. “Self-injurious behaviors (SIB) are commonly linked with other co-existing diseases such as addiction,” explained Gina Thorne, Vice President of Marketing at Lakeview Health. “And so we believe that it was particularly important for this lecture to make good information more publically available.” Part of Lakeview Health’s Professional Lecture Series, “CUTTING EDGE: Assessing & Treating Clients with Self-Injurious Behaviors”, will be facilitated by expert Barbara Melton, M.Ed., LPC, LPCS, NCC/MAC, CACII and will help participants access those engaging in SIB and understand the important differences between suicidal and parasuicidal behavior. The lecture will also help in the identification of resources and treatment, including interventions. “We are hearing and reading more about self-injurious behavior in the news, especially as celebrities speak publicly about their own personal experiences,” added Melton. “But with so much misinformation out there it is becomes even more imperative to equip families and medical professionals with accurate information.”

Barbara Melton, M.Ed., LPC, LPCS, NCC/MAC, CACII has a private practice in downtown Charleston and works with adolescent and adult populations on a number of issues, including but not limited to; working with clients who engage in self-injurious behaviors, trauma and loss, borderline personality disorder, and mood disorders. She has taught graduate-level courses at Columbia College and Coastal Carolina University, and teaches a Clinical Supervision course at Webster University.
