Lakeview Health announces the opening of its new Women’s Program, which is home to The Rose of Lakeview, a gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment program for women recovering from addiction to drugs and alcohol. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication took place on May 13, and the program is now open and accepting new patients. Built on four acres of newly acquired land adjacent to Lakeview’s existing campus, the Rose is a 54-bed, 35,600-square-foot facility that provides housing for women in treatment and serves as the location for their detox, medical care, and primary therapy. The new program allows treatment to be completely gender separate, with men being housed and treated in renovated space in the Men’s program, the Star of Lakeview Health. The Rose provides spaces that help patients focus on self-care and relationship development. It has a spa to help patients relax, destress while developing relationships with other female peers. As a part of the Women’s Program expansion, a labyrinth has been added to the Lakeview grounds. This form of silent, walking meditation gives people a way to remove themselves from the worries that often accompany early recovery. Other spaces are available to promote connectedness, including the dining room—which has an indoor garden—to separate gathering spaces and library. The Rose of Lakeview is responsive to the special needs of women in treatment. Until recently, it was assumed that methods designed to treat men recovering from addiction were appropriate for treating women as well. A significant body of research has emerged, however, that indicates not only that women become addicted for different reasons than men but also that the factors contributing to women’s recovery differ from those for men. This recognition has led treatment providers to modify programs to meet the special needs of women. One of the major contributors to women’s addiction is trauma. Surveys of women in recovery have shown that emotional and physical trauma are significant contributing factors to addiction in women. Although numbers vary because of differences in the definition of trauma, most studies have found that between 70 and 90 percent of women in addiction treatment have experienced at least one significant traumatic event in their past, including abuse as a child, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. Lakeview’s trauma-informed approach helps women to heal from past trauma, which increases their prospects for long-term sobriety. Lakeview Health has designed the Women’s program so that the space itself contributes to the recovery process. The residences will not be mistaken for hospital rooms. Instead, they have the warm atmosphere of a cozy apartment. Each semiprivate room is spacious and well furnished. In place of drab hospital bedding, the beds have multiple pillows and colorful quilts. Each guest has her own armoire. And to help patients feel at home and connected to their families, we have provided boards in their rooms where they can hang personal pictures of those they love. The rooms are close to attending doctors and clinical therapists 24 hours a day. “Our facilities have been intentionally designed to respond to the medical and clinical needs of our residents. When women enter the Rose, they will feel a sense of peace and worthiness.” stated Sarah Kovach, Clinical Manager for the Rose.
