Lakeview Health, a nationally recognized addiction treatment center in Jacksonville, Florida, will dedicate its new Women’s Center on May 13, 2016. This opening marks our third—and most important—campus expansion. The center will be the home to The Rose of Lakeview, our addiction treatment program for women. Events scheduled for the day include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a chance to meet the staff of Lakeview, and a guest lecture by Dr. Stephanie S. Covington.

The Women’s Center has been built on four acres of newly acquired land adjacent to Lakeview’s existing campus. The center is a 54-bed, 35,600-square-foot facility that will provide housing for women in treatment and serve as the location for their detox, medical care, and primary therapy. The new center allows treatment to be completely gender separate, with men being housed and treated in renovated space in our existing facility.

The opening of the new Women’s Center marks the final phase of Lakeview’s transition to gender-responsive treatment. This approach to recovery takes into account differences in the way women and men respond to specific treatment approaches, increasing the prospects of long-term recovery.  As Dr. Philip Hemphill, chief clinical officer at Lakeview Health, explains, “We examined everything relating to treatment—including the hiring of staff, the way the program is developed, and the content of the sessions—to ensure that they all address the reality women face when approaching treatment.”

The Women’s Center provides spaces that help patients focus on self-care and relationship development. It has a spa to help patients relax and destress while developing mindfulness. As a part of the Women’s Center expansion, a labyrinth has been added to the Lakeview grounds. This form of silent, walking meditation gives people a way to remove themselves from the worries that often accompany recovery, which allows the patients to get in touch with their spirituality. Other spaces are also designed to promote connectedness, including the dining room—which has an indoor garden—and the living spaces used by residential patients.

As part of the day’s events, Dr. Stephanie S. Covington will be leading a workshop entitled “Helping Women Recover: A Program for Treating Addiction.” Dr. Covington is an internationally recognized clinician, author, organizational consultant, and lecturer. She is a pioneer in the field of women’s issues, addiction, and recovery. She has developed an innovative, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed approach to the treatment needs of women and girls that results in effective services in public, private, and institutional settings.

News media and the public are invited to attend the dedication.
