Doctors and staff are ready to respond to community needs
Jacksonville, Fla., June 5, 2017 – Lakeview Health is closely watching as the opioid crisis becomes a major topic on the state and national level. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration assembled a committee to further study the epidemic, Ohio became the second state to sue drug manufacturers for their role in the crisis and the state of Florida is distributing money to combat the problem. Doctors and staff at Lakeview Health treat those who are suffering from this addiction and are committed to helping individuals heal – mind, body and spirit. Dr. Adrian Blotner is Lakeview’s campus psychiatrist and is board certified in both psychiatry and pain medicine. “Twenty-seven percent of the patients who come to us for help tell us their substance of use was opioids,” said Blotner. “The majority of those patients come in with an addiction to narcotic pain medications and heroin. We utilize appropriate and effective short-term medication management to help our patients transition as the drugs are washing out of their body and mind. We use safe, non-habit forming medication for longer term treatment for chronic pain, mood and anxiety symptoms. We also focus on counseling, stress management, emotional support, physical health and relapse prevention.” Lakeview Health’s multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, behavioral health associates and certified trainers support individuals throughout the entire treatment process. For those who have struggled with chronic pain that led to addiction, they favor a three-pronged approach that includes healthy physical activity that does not worsen the pain condition, non-habit-forming medications that treat the nerves that transmit the pain and stress management and lifestyle adjustments to facilitate increased mental, emotional and physical functioning. Blotner said the opioid crisis needs the attention it is now getting on the state and federal level. Florida Governor Rick Scott’s focus on the opioid crisis has helped challenge business and community leaders, healthcare practitioners, family, friends, and coworkers to renew efforts to engage in dialogue and collaborative action. The increased community awareness and media focus on the opioid crisis is an opportunity for education and to better offer and facilitate solutions for those who suffer from substance use disorders.
