The Miracle Man of Aftercare at Stepping Stone
Imagine watching a brick wall come tumbling down before your very eyes as you sit quietly watching in a room full of friends, only to reveal, another friend was behind the wall. Imagine bringing that friend ashore, welcoming them home in open arms. Now imagine watching waves crashing down on a sandy beach washing over all the debris, taking everything that fell back into the ocean. That is what it is like watching patient’s barriers to recovery come tumbling down in a group therapy session with Juan Deas. When asked, Juan shared why group therapy is so effective he said, “It’s really hard for a patient to hide in a group,” and therefore, the walls that were barriers prior to the group therapy come tumbling down in front of their peers (as if watching the Great Wall of China go into pieces.). With over 26 years of sobriety, Juan Deas found that he was suited for his job as a therapist early on in his career through the guidance of others around him. Juan has a Masters in Healthcare Administration, with a major in human services. His experience in legislation and lobbying for addicts and alcoholics leads him to a deep understanding of the recovery process for patients and their entire family. By following treatment paths that make the most sense for the whole person, and the family, Deas carries out successful aftercare – and tells us what aspects of aftercare work best for the individuals and their families.
