Do you know someone who has unexplained low back pain? Do they spend most of their day sitting? The problem could lie with the featured muscle of this week’s Muscle Monday: the psoas. The psoas works alongside the iliacus to flex the hip. It does so due to its origin on the lumbar spine, and insertion on the top of the femur. Thinking about the positioning, it makes sense that if this muscle is tight it will directly cause pain on the lower back. Most often symptoms can be relieved through stretching of the muscle, but don’t let it fool you. A tight muscle is not necessarily a stronger muscle. You should still work to strengthen this muscle, but perform the stretch to return it to its natural length. Furthermore, get up from the chair every now and then and walk around! Follow up with the video below. https://youtu.be/x3OJD57pzm0 Want to check out our other Muscle Monday videos?
