How Do You Spell Relief?

Anxiety is my enemy and feels like the longest relationship in my life. Growing up in a family of addiction, anxiety became a warm blanket of protection. I was sensitive and always wanted to make sure my parents (‘user’ and ‘non-user’) were OK. As an adult, this coping mechanism doesn’t work for me any more, especially as my parents age. At one time, I turned to substance abuse to cope with my anxiety. In recovery, I am forced to trust God because I fail at removing anxiety by my own willpower. I recognize when my anxiety arises and it is usually has the underpinnings of fear. I become irritable and frustrated and I look for ways to escape by changing my surroundings. Unfortunately, I can’t escape my mind and I am left with my anxious thoughts. These thoughts often lead to feelings of panic and paralysis. And then the grace of God enters my mind through a scripture I have memorized, Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I have learned that scripture is my best weapon against anxiety in my life. When I couple God’s word with behavioral techniques that I learned in recovery, my anxiety goes away. What scripture helps you find relief from anxiety? Share your thoughts below.
