Deciding to enter addiction treatment is stressful, exciting, and overwhelming all at the same time. Choosing an addiction treatment facility can be confusing due to all of the different choices of addiction treatment programs that an individual can attend. There is long-term vs. short-term, in state vs. out of state and private pay vs. insurance options. It is helpful to be able to make an informed decision regarding choosing an addiction treatment center. Understanding your addiction treatment options and gathering information can decrease stress and help the transition to treatment go more smoothly.
Addiction Treatment Options
- Long-Term Treatment – A combination of detox and a drug rehab program can last three months or more.
- Short-Term Treatment – A combination of detox and a drug rehab program can last up to 42 days.
- Detox Only – Depending on the type of drug and frequency of use, it can last up to 14 days. Most last 3-7 days.
- Local Treatment – Found within the individual’s immediate area. Sometimes, this is not recommended because of the potential for elopement due to the person’s familiarity with the area.
- Out of State Treatment – A geographical separation, even of a distance of three hours, might be helpful when choosing a detox and drug rehab. Out of state treatment sends the individual away from his or her familiar environment. Friends also struggling with addiction will be less likely to have an influence on the person, and risk for elopement decreases.
- Insurance Programs – Insurance companies should be able to tell you whether or not you have an inpatient benefit for addiction treatment. If you are interested in a particular treatment provider, they may be able to take your insurance information and call your insurer to inquire about benefits on your behalf.
- Private Pay Programs – Addiction treatment can be costly; however, the benefit of getting help is priceless. Some private pay programs will be flexible and work with you on a payment plan.
How to Choose Your Addiction Treatment Program
Before deciding what type of drug rehab center you want to go to, it is helpful to have some core questions to ask the admissions coordinator. Here are some examples:
- Does your program have an addictionologist on staff? An addictionologist is a medical doctor that specializes in working with those struggling with addiction.
- How long is the program? There are various stages of addiction treatment. An individual must attend detox and drug rehab consecutively for optimum results. Some addiction treatment centers will have a detox program and drug rehab within the same facility.
- What does the program offer? A quality drug rehab should offer individual, and group counseling, educational lectures, daily living skills groups, relapse prevention and have a medical staff present.
- What is the policy regarding family interaction? Most treatment programs have policies regarding phone calls, visitation, and therapy.
- How much will this cost? Some addiction treatment centers take insurance, and some are private pay. Addiction treatment can be costly, but going to a quality drug rehab is extremely beneficial. Insurance may require copayment per day or that you pay your deductible in full before your benefits begin.
