Christmas Fitness: Gift Advice From The Wellness Center Staff
By Lakeview Health Wellness Center Staff
Christmas is here once again and you might be wondering, “What is a good gift to give to a loved one or a friend?” How about the gift of health and wellness? Big Shocker… the fitness staff is encouraging the idea of giving “Christmas Fitness” to friends and family. However, in all seriousness, wouldn’t it be nice to see your family and friends live a healthier life? We’re not saying you need to put a set of dumbbells or a gym membership under the tree this year. In most cases, this doesn’t work. I know a lot of people that have their own home gym equipment and use it for a doorstop or garage table. Nonetheless, we believe in the empowerment and importance of sharing the gift of fitness with others and want to help you spread it to your loved ones. If you really want someone you know to start working out, how about taking the initiative and being their workout partner? Joining in gives them a sense of accountability and comfort they may not have going the road alone. Remember the first time you worked out? It can be overwhelming for someone who hasn’t worked out in a while. Sure, you may have to sacrifice some of your time or rearrange your schedule to do this but remember this gift is for them and their health and wellbeing is important to you.
Pro Tip: You want to keep in mind that whoever you’re working out with may not be as advanced as you are, so start off slow. Recommend they complete half of your normal workout and lower the weights. Ease them into it. The last thing you want to do is make them so sore that they can’t walk for a week. That’s our job.
Fitness is not just going to a gym and working out; it can be recreational activities as well, such as hiking, kayaking, rock climbing or any other activity you and your family/friends enjoy. A great way to start can be as simple as taking your family for a daily walk. Starting with a simple walk around the block or at the park is enough to make changes and improve confidence in their abilities. Furthermore, this simple outing will open communication and allow you to get closer to a loved one or friend. A stronger relationship can be used to plan a more adventurous workout next time.
Pro Tip: If you start by simply walking, allow them to set the pace. Don’t push ahead hoping for them to keep up. As the initial workout becomes habit, use subtle hints that maybe they could increase speed, or try jogging. Allow the beginner to feel like it’s their idea and they are more likely to stick to it.
So now that you have these gift ideas, it’s time for you to apply them. Remember your style of exercise may not be for everyone. Find a middle ground. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone, so get outside of your comfort zone. Finally, have a reward for you and your gift recipient. Something like a massage, shopping trip, nice dinner, or whatever you both enjoy. Hope this new approach to giving health and fitness works for you and your loved ones this holiday season!
