Josh Brent’s decision to retire from the NFL didn’t come easy, but he knew he had to put football behind him. The former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle couldn’t be concerned with the sport anymore. He’s facing a manslaughter charge for killing his teammate Jerry Brown in a drunk driving accident. In December 2012, Brent was driving with Brown in the passenger seat. Traveling at a high speed, Brent hit a curb and flipped the car. He suffered minor injuries, but Brown died later at the hospital. Brent’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. Brent is currently out on bond and forbidden to drive. Authorities are monitoring him for alcohol use. They’re also watching closely for drug use, because while free on bond, he had already tested positive twice for marijuana. The trial is set for September 23. If found guilty, Brent may go to prison for up to 20 years. The lesser possible sentence is probation. Drinking impairs coordination and judgment, and slows reaction time.
