A Manageable Life Through God

Addicts and alcoholics struggle with many hardships in life, like failing health, loss of relationships, broken families and financial problems. With so much on their backs, it’s no wonder that many of them slip into depression and further into addiction. A big mistake addicts make is to believe that they can control their substance abuse. There are two truths in this situation:

  1. They turned away from God.
  2. They were never in control to begin with. Alcohol and drugs took control.

The 12 steps, created by William Griffith Wilson (Bill W.) and Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith (Dr. Bob), exemplify the core values from the Bible. In step one, you admit that you are powerless over alcohol or drugs and your life is unmanageable. Romans 7:18 states “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but cannot carry it out.” It’s impossible to lead a happy and fulfilling life when you forsake your relationship with God. Without His guidance and love, it’s easy to fall into the trap of temptation. However, you soon realize that there is a hole in your heart that no amount of drugs or alcohol can fill. In Matthew 19:26, “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” By finding your way back to God’s light and letting Him help you carry your burden, your life can become stable again.
