The Ethical Impact of Working with Individuals Struggling with Addiction

Today’s SUD epidemic and behavior health needs has increased the burden on those providing care as daily reminders import a sense of stress on the professional’s system.  At the same time, individuals must feel and see one’s professional code of ethics demonstrated which requires a commitment to competence, integrity, morality, altruism, and trustworthiness.  Professionals are govern by a promotion of the public good within their domain and must rely on internal guides of character while external guides such as laws, policies, and ethical codes of conduct are fashioned into a practice.

At times circumstances outside of one’s control, can result in overwhelming stress yet the ability to self-manage, lead, and remain competent are demands which are expected to be met despite the strain.  Malpractice investigations and lawsuits are almost predictable in the current litigious climate, and these circumstances are quite stressful and even traumatic for the professional involved and his/her family.  The maintenance of high levels of positive affect and well-being in the face of significant adversity are expected in professional practice. It is the ability to maintain emotional balance and flexibility, while reacting and responding to situations with mental and emotional acumen.

This workshop will explore professionalism in both individuals and groups while reinforcing standards and ethics.  Through didactic and interacting in small group discussions on self-care, boundaries and professionalism you will learn effective tools and processes for managing relationships and distressing life events.  It will focus on the influence and integration of temperament, character, and distinctive qualities which cross sect professional development and the life cycle.  These factors are blended to create one’s professional self.  The expectations of respecting professional boundaries and the law within everyday practice will be presented with case examples for discussion.

Objectives

  1. List three variables that contribute to the development of one’s professional self.
  2. Explain the 4 stage ethical decision making process when presented with common practice scenarios.
  3. Identify a self-stress cycle in the delivery of care and three strategies to manage your vulnerabilities.
