Dr. Melissa Lee Warner has recently joined Lakeview Health as its chief medical officer. She has more than 20 years of experience in addiction medicine and is now leading a clinical team that she has described as a gem in the rough being polished. Treatment at Lakeview addresses all of a patient’s issues with an appropriate modality.  It begins with medicated detox for withdrawal, which gives patients the opportunity to approach their residential rehab without the influence of alcohol or drugs. Each patient is unique and may be facing a range of other conditions, including mood disorders like anxiety or depression, sleep disturbances or the problem of managing chronic pain without addictive painkillers. Managing these other conditions is a huge part of treatment. Treating sleep problems or chronic pain goes a long way toward setting a patient up for a successful recovery. And having a patient who is clean and sober can help them better address these issues or mental health issues like depression or anxiety. Dr. Warner now heads a team that she calls “bright, passionate and committed to growth and improvement.”  That clinical teamwork includes the individual treatment from physicians to address medical problems and work in the small group setting, which Dr. Warner considers the key for addiction treatment. In addition, the work done in the family program is essential because it involves both the clinical staff, who know the patient and the substances involved, and the family, who know what factors will affect recovery and relapse–information that will help improve treatment. In some cases, it means talking to a referring therapist or talking to the patient’s spouse, just to make that final difference in getting treatment to work. Hear more about Dr. Warner and her approach to addiction treatment in our podcast.
