Substance use is a problem that affects everyone worldwide. Many people and organizations work hard to fight this problem and help people who struggle with addiction or have been affected by a loved one’s addiction. In Kenya, Christians and Muslims are working together to fight the substance use problem that is plaguing the country and threatening to kill a whole generation.

Fighting the Addiction Battle with God’s Help

The addiction problem in Kenya is reaching a crisis level and some religious leaders claim it’s a national disaster. Alcohol, cocaine, heroin, bhang (marijuana) and khat (a stimulant) are the drugs of choice for many Kenyans and are destroying many lives and families. However, Christian and Muslim groups are doing all they can to stop the destruction. Both religions are using their educational arenas for the fight—Christian Sunday schools and Islamic madrassas. Rehab and psychosocial support is offered as well as preventive education, life skills training and promoting awareness to the public. It’s a large task that Christians and Muslims have taken on willingly. Romans 15:1 tells us, “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.” These Christians that have a strong relationship with God are reaching out to those who are lost and in need help with their drug addiction.

God Love to Push Forward

The Christians and Muslims in Kenya have taken on a large task of helping addicts. They see that others are struggling. Many lives are lost and families are torn by alcohol and drug use. John 15:12 reminds us of the word of God, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” These people are making changes and saving lives of their fellow Kenyans because it is God’s law.
