Did you ever meet at Denny’s after a Bible study for fellowship and more discussion? It was a place that you could go to and not have to worry about loud intoxicated people. In fact your group would be the loudest group there. Starbucks is the Denny’s of today for recovering Christian addicts. It is a place that you can go and meet for a coffee and fellowship without too much distraction. My concern is that when Starbucks introduces alcohol to the menu, will it attract another type of crowd? Don’t get me wrong: Clearly we cannot alcohol-proof every environment that we put ourselves in. It is somehow disappointing that a staple for coffee will now be associated with alcohol, too. Starbucks began testing their new products in Spain and now have started selling beer and wine in a few parts of the United States. It seems that the desire to expand clientele and make more money might alienate some existing customers. I guess recovering alcoholics will have to go to Dunkin Donuts for coffee and fellowship if they want it to be in alcohol-free surroundings. After you build coping skills for managing triggers outside of Christian alcohol rehab it is up to you whether or not you want to go to a Starbucks that serves alcohol.
