As Christian parents, you do everything to instill the Christian faith and values in your children. You raise them in church, take them to Sunday school, teach them to pray and read the Bible with them. You hope that they live their lives the right way and don’t have to struggle too much. However, children don’t do what you want them to do. And if they fall into a life of alcohol and drugs, it can be devastating for you and your family. What do you do when you feel like you have failed as a parent, failed your child and failed God?

Let Go and Let God

If your child struggles with alcohol or drug addiction, you might feel responsible. You start recalling your steps and actions you took with your child; where did you go wrong? The important thing to remember is that you are powerless but God is not. It is difficult to believe this fully and let go of the wheel, because as a parent you want to do all you can for your children and help them. But you don’t have to because God is in control. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

He Has a Plan

You might not understand how you, your child and your family have gotten to this point, but what you need to know is that you have God. He is always there to help His children; all you have to do is seek Him. When you ask Him for help, He delivers. You may not recognize his answer—it may be in the form of addiction rehab and treatment. Be open to His works in every part of your life.
